Considering what code we have available, and the issues of building on, or targetting 64 bits and the availability of simple PAE patches for 128gb of ram for everything from XP sp3->win10, and that server 2003 RTM supports 64gb in the datacenter and enterprise versions, would it not be unreasonable to focus mostly on x86? as far as I know there aren't any major benefits to 64bits outside of the increase in ram, which unless your running a somewhat modern server or workstation I think 64gb/128gb of ram is more then reasonable for this project, I currently have 2 machines PAE patched one with 8gb and one with 12gb of ram and it's stable af outside of having to use an old nvidia card and driver, though I believe AMD does support PAE

is relying on PAE fine?
also anyone know the status of openNTGuy, or the other peeps who were working on winlogon? outside of them missing from the threads here

anyone have the status of what is actively being worked on besides the build process and winlogon?

I'm well aware, I'm just saying considering the status of the project is it not unreasable to rely on PAE and having the build simply be a retro OS until we can properly update everything with new code, and a build process suitable for modern hardware? 4 threads and 8gb of ram is more then enough for a dedicated rig/vm for working on this project, I currently have a windows XP machine and a windows 7 machine for working on this, both having more then enough power

Having no physical memory limitation in practice is just one small advantage. With 32-bit + PAE you're still limited to 3-4GB of RAM per process, or even less in this case since 32-bit Windows only allocates up to 2GB. So it's a pretty serious limitation if you ever want to run modern software or do work with VMs or photo/video editing. The other issue too is trying to port software from other platforms where only 64-bit versions are maintained. 64-bit operating systems are more maintainable and have more of a future, seeing as x86-64 will be the default architecture for a long time to come.

anon that got winlogon2000 to run without rebooting here, I was doing some work updating the win2000 src to match closer to win2003's binary, seems they reordered the operation of a lot of things (maybe to prevent people using a modded win2000 winlogon to bypass WPA, which is now what we're trying to do...)
Kinda lost enthusiasm when the threads slowed down though, & hearing about people on the chatroom fixing stuff like asms01 without posting anything here pretty much killed it.
Hopefully one of the systime.obj reversers are still working on that, maybe seeing stuff like that get fixed up will bring back more interest.

I don't know why I didn't post the method to fix asms01.cab here before, but here goes.
Download this file: https://anonymousfiles.io/BQmYbCl5/
1. Extract the files from folder 1 into your source tree before you build
2. build the source
3. Extract the files from folder 2 into your binaries.x86fre folder before you postbuild.
4. Add these lines to pbuild.dat, just above BEGIN sxs_make_asms_cabs.cmd:
BEGIN %RazzleToolPath%\PostBuildScripts\idkwhy\fixManifest.cmd
END %RazzleToolPath%\PostBuildScripts\idkwhy\fixManifest.cmd
5. Run postbuild
This just adds the missing gdiplus files from a 2k3 ISO and makes sure the file hash in the manifest is correct.

That should mean it's changing the other sxs dlls too though, must be somewhere that tells it to fix the hashes for those

Seems winfusesfcgen.cmd handles updating the hashes, needs binplace.log-sxs to mention the added gdiplus though.
Updating some of the txt files inside enduser\asms\ might let that happen, data.txt maybe, I'll try playing around with it later.

Ha, seems that's the case, windows\advcore\dirs doesn't include gdiplus dir, so 1.0.100.0 never gets built, and our asms01.cab gets fucked because it's missing
Not sure if we can just add that to the dirs file or not though (duser folder used it's own build system shit, probably why that wasn't in dirs neither)
I'll look into it some more later, need to setup a new build VM...

During my first attempts, I used to just run the mt command before postbuild, but sometimes that would result in an invalid cab/inf. After I moved it into the pbuild.dat and made it run just before sxs_make_asms_cabs, I haven't had that problem.

I'm here. But I work very slowly (but thoroughly, lol).
At the expense of Windows XP on SSD. All talk about an imminent death is a bullshit, I used a 120GB SSD as a system one for 4 years, and it lost 1% of its life all the time. After installing Windows 10 and a little work with it, he quickly lost another percent. In any case, for a while the utility for predicting the disk lifetime showed me 500 years, which is more than enough for a cheap disk :)

Anybody has issues with Reddit loading? Probably never. As >>78231631 said anons have been working for a long ass time just getting the thing to build. Security/feature patches are likely to never happen. Plus there are no drivers for modern hardware, and it's not 64 bit. It would be peak comfy to use XP Yotauba Edition but it probably won't happen. I don't want to downplay this, as this is the furthest I've seen a /g/ project get but it's a huge ask.

I wouldn't say never. Once we figure out how to build it cleanly and consistently we can work on extensions to the code base like small new features, security patches, and custom branding. It might get new hardware support under one condition, and that's if there are open source drivers for any given piece of hardware. Otherwise you're gonna be stuck trying to make a shim for closed source drivers and that's pretty hellish and won't ever be a priority.

Hm, seems the files you copy from folder 2 for postbuild, with the redirectBinding stuff inside etc, are also found in the GdiPlus code, at windows\advcore\gdiplus\engine\policy_1.0

Since we can't build GdiPlus that doesn't get used ofc, but copying that folder to windows\advcore\gdiplus_fix & updating dirs file does seem to let it get placed in the right folder inside binaries.x86fre

Only issue is that there's no .cat file to go with it, maybe that'd get generated during postbuild though.
No idea if it works yet since I'm having other issues with asms01 atm (only 4 asms getting put into the .cab for some reason, even though binaries\asms\ folder has them all inside...), hopefully that's just something to do with building under Win7, I'll try an XP build later.

There's some WPA code in there but not much, that's probably why they're supplied as .obj instead of as source code

Again we've been doing updates for weeks now, eg. the anon that updated the XP processr.sys source code to match server2003's version. It's not exactly hard to bindiff our binaries against the patched versions and copy changes over, just time consuming.

I didn't even notice that folder. To be honest, once I had asms01.cab building correctly, I just stopped messing with it and turned to working on other postbuild stuff.
I just tested your discovery and it works perfectly. The .cat file is definitely created during postbuild.
This makes the fix much better, since we're now actually creating the manifest file ourselves:

2. run this command (after razzle):

3. add "gdiplus_asms" to the windows/advcore/dirs file
4. add these lines to pbuild.dat, just before sxs_make_asms_cabs:

END %RazzleToolPath%\PostBuildScripts\idkwhy\fixManifest.cmd
Then just build and postbuild like normally.

Regarding the other issues you mentioned, Windows 7 shouldn't be a problem. I have been building on it for over a week now with this method (well, the version I posted before) and it works every time.
What does your hivesxs.inf look like?

Hmm, I just found the opposite right before you posted, the .cat doesn't get made for me, and thanks to that sxs_make_asms_cabs/sxsofflineinstall quits early with only 4 things ending up inside asms01.cab, and an error msg:

Might have found why fixManifest was needed, seems rebase crap changes the base addr of the DLL, which breaks the hash inside .man
There's a tools\postbuildscripts\frozen_asms.reb file which seems to be used to exclude files from rebasing though, has some other sxs asms in there, might just need to add gdiplus path in there and it won't touch it, gonna try it now

>moved prebuild to tools\prebuild.cmd, no longer deletes itself afterwards in case it needs to be ran again

Of course, huge thanks to the anons that helped find these fixes!

I've only tested under Win7 because fuck waiting hours for a build, don't think these would break anything under XP though, if anyone tries it let me know how it goes

There is one small issue with the DUser.dll build though, atm it gets placed into binaries.x86fre/DUser/ but seems postbuild etc wants it to be at the binaries.x86fre root.
You can work around it by copying the DLL there yourself after building DUser, but ideally this should be done by the build scripts, dunno why it isn't.
(Seems like maybe pre-built DUser was meant to be copied in as a "drop", maybe there's a postbuild step that tries doing something like that, not sure)

Editing placefil shouldn't have any downsides hopefully, haven't seen anything that depends on it being inside DUser folder at least.

Also noticed the built DUser.dll is like 100KB+ larger than the one from server2003 ISO, not sure what's up with that, pretty sure most of the other bins we build usually match ISO sizes almost perfectly...

Ah think I figured it out, running "bldenv debug" sets compiler not to use optimizations, and "bldenv release" doesn't reset it.
In the guide we build debug before release so that duser\duser.dll is always a release dll, if we swap them around then it'd get replaced by debug DLL instead...

Seems using

set MSC_OPTIMIZATION=&& build /cZP

works though, DLL is same size as ISO one now, still a few small differences though I think

I've found a way to get these 16-bit DOS / Windows 3.1 build tools to work under Win XP x64 using Dosbox-X.
As well as a way to run the Razzle build prompt to build for 32-bit & 64-bit.

When it needs run a 16-bit tool:

it will popup a Dosbox-X
it will run the 16-bit command in Dosbox-X
Dosbox-X will close itself,
The build process continues.

As files are read from and written to the correct folders, it allows 16-bit stuff to build as a whole with the rest of the 32-bit en 64-bit build process.

Someone needs to check if it works under other Windows versions

Someone needs to check if I can get rid of the manual completion confirmation for cl16.exe when running under Windows 3.1

Someone needs to simplify this or completely replace it with something better.

There is some shit with the ExpSystemIsInCmosMode assignment on line 539, the compiler cuts it out. I'm not very familiar with such things, and I would be grateful if someone else looks at this code and find bug.

Got it working, using the XP src updated to match 2003's exports, with sig checks removed
Seems to allow pretty much any key (all A's gave an error, but all F's worked fine, and of course the classic FCKGW)

FCK* key is a VL key, while your build recognizes itself as Retail one (Yellow sticker pic dialog). Whatever youre doing you are doing it wrong. To get VL build, you have to change setuppp.ini to *270, and it needs then DPCDLL.DL_

If you don't use a defused lsass/winlogon/kernel, stuff like that will happen, as you are only tampering at install time, but the validation checks still exist in user and kernel code. At time was art how to defuse these things, and became a nightmare when MS strengthen them in WPA2 (xpsp2, win2k3sp1) .

At one time, I decompiled some WRK files so well that after compilation they turned into binary identical object files, and when comparing the C code obtained at that time with the code from this leak, there were practically no differences (except for comments and variable names, of course). Hmmm... Not sure. If I remember well, cl16 is a DPMI client, and as far as I remember, leecher1337 had said his build had problems with DPMI apps. But was sometime ago, maybe he already fixed it, or the problem only exist if you use his HAXM build (CCPU full emu is slow, but there aren't so many 16bit components to compile, so maybe we would take the tradeoff if it would make possible build this shit completely in Win7 64bit, or even Win10).

Hey anons, i've been talking with leecher1337 about his NTVDM project, and he says cl16 is actually an NT executable with a DOS extender known as Pharlap TNT attached to it. While checking about it, I found this link and utility.

Supposedly this patch removes the extender, and converts patched programs into NT executables. Would be worth the intent to try it in the 16bit toolchain, and see if we can remove dependency on NTVDM with it.

I tried to run the cl.exe from Visual C++ 1.52, available here on my Windows XP x64 and it did run without the need for Dosbox..
It even contains the C/C++ Compiler 8, while the incompatible NT\com\ole32\olethunk\ole16\tools\cl16.exe is version 7, which doesn't run on x64.

Maybe these executables are are a drop-in replacement for the tools\tools16 & NT\com\ole32\olethunk\ole16\tools & NT\printscan\faxsrv\print\faxprint\faxdrv\win9x\sdk\binw16, as they are 32-bit, but still target 16-bit.

When making this package, I was focusing on getting rid of postbuild errors in the same order as they happen. Therefore, instead of just blindly adding everything from filechk.pl like, for example, "adminpak.msi" to the zip, I tracked down which errors were causing it not to be created and added the missing files it needed.

After extracting this to the binaries.x86fre folder, I recommend running this command to get rid of a few more errors:
xcopy %_NTPOSTBLD%\valueadd %_NTPOSTBLD%\srvinf\valueadd\ /E /H /C /R /Q /Y

In a postbuild where a SKU is not specified, there will still be errors for "fixprn.pl", "ntbackuponpersonal.cmd", "gpmc.cmd" and "msi.cmd". These can not be cleared without a reconstruction of the source files they expect.
Since we're adding their binaries, they can be safely commented out of pbuild.dat for an error-free postbuild.

I am still getting occasional filechk errors for "hwcomp.dat". If that happens, adding this to a .bat file, running it and doing postbuild again will clear those errors (running it before the first postbuild will not work):

Weird that it can't be found anywhere though, google only has 1 result from some cyberlink.com forum post attachment (that I can't find the post for), don't see why someone would post files from XP leak onto a cyberlink support site, guess there must be some XP/server release that includes it but haven't found any yet.

Hmm, which cl16 are you talking about tho? The one we have problems with is inside com\ole32\olethunk\ole16\tools\, doesn't seem like that is an NT exe at all.

AFAIK we've tried replacing the tools in there with the 32-bit/8.00 versions but the code isn't very compatible with it, gives errors and shit which the 7.00/16bit ver didn't. Maybe just needs some fixes added to the code, dunno if anyone tried it.

For __fpurecall error we can define our own _fpurecall function instead, based on the _purecall definition from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/c-runtime-library/reference/purecall?view=vs-2019

So near the top of com\ole32\olethunk\ole16\ole2\memstm.cxx & com\ole32\olethunk\ole16\compobj\stdalloc.cxx, add

extern "C" int __cdecl _fpurecall() {return 0;};

The SizeAssoc/GetStartPosition/etc errors are due to the impl. for them being defined in map_kv.h header file, seems class members in header get inlined by newer compilers, which prevents compobj.def from exporting them. Moving funcs to the map_kv.cxx file solves that

The commands in the "fix" are the exact commands that that it fails on. I haven't been able to figure out exactly why they fail. It doesn't happen every time it runs, though. It seem to work when postbuild is only doing 1 sku (and therefore, only running one instance of hwdatgen).
Postbuild definitely doesn't skip over it after they fail, but sometimes the second run returns an error as well. (except when the "fix" is run)
Sometimes the error code given is 2 (ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) and sometimes the error code is 20 (ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION).
20 is definitely the more common one, so that leads me to believe that it's a race condition thing and might work every time if postbuild was run with only a single core.

We have the source for hwdatgen, it's in the folder "base/ntsetup/win95upg/tools/hwdatgen". The function that throws the error is "CreateNtHardwareList", called on line 283. It is defined in hwcomp.c in folder "base/ntsetup/win95upg/w95upg/hwcomp" (starts around line 3600).
Like the names of the folders suggest, this is related to windows 95 upgrade. Therefore, it's probably not a mission-critical component, which is why I mentioned that building an ISO after getting this error will still work. If we are unable to figure this error out, I am sure we can just patch out support for upgrading from windows 95 and we'll be fine.

It does seem like they use wrapper.cmd to run hwdatgen asynchronously, so yeah probably race conditions are involved, likely wasn't designed for multi-core setups.

There is some code to deal with sharing_violation inside hwcomp.c too, only tries 600 times though, fast CPU might burn through those quickly
There is a Sleep(1000) that should slow it down, but that's only if it's SHARING_VIOLATION error, if there's ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND errors before that it could probably go through 600 pretty fast.

Has anyone tested copying "base\fs\utils\dfrg" from the xpsp1 source, since it's missing from the 2k3 source?
I just tried, and it compiles without errors.
It created "Defrag.exe", "dfrg.msc", "dfrg.reg", "dfrgfat.exe", "dfrgntfs.exe", "dfrgres.dll", "dfrgsnap.dll", "dfrgui.dll" and "install.bat" in the binaries.x86fre folder.

I am not sure exactly how to go about testing the files and/or comparing them to the original 2k3 files.
Some of the file sizes are the same (but not all)

Nice find, you'd need something like IDA+BinDiff+symbols released from MS if you wanted to compare it with win2003 binaries & port over changes

It's not really too difficult to do, IDA/HexRays + symbols can almost give you a full decompilation, and BinDiff can tell you which functions have changed, it can take some time to get it matching fully though.

Seems if you're using an AMD64 build OS you need to run razzle like so, otherwise it'll default to AMD64 build, and throw a ton of errors at you:

Pic related, not too bad, olethunk crap seems to have got built fine, maybe with some more work it could all build successfully.
Gonna go back to Win7 x86 for now tho since that's still the fastest, but would be sweet if I could build on my main Win10 box without even needing a VM...

(I did try sizzles amd64 build tools as well but those gave even more errors... probably could have sped up the build a lot though, too bad... maybe I'll try another run some time using just the compiler parts of them)

I'll see about updating build-win2k3 with the 16-bit fixes in a little while, need to run another build test under x86 to make sure it's all fine first, but hopefully this'll solve all the NTVDM issues people were having.

Could be worth going through the vid and comparing our folders to those, wonder if it might have winlogon/Bison.skl/etc inside.

If you unlock PAE in XP(to get all RAM), you need well-behaved drivers.
Also, you need to transplant usb drivers from win2k3(which are PAE-compliant).
If you have PAE non-compliant driver, either it goes away, or PAE does.

According to this article, lack of support for PAE in driver is exception, rather than rule.

Oh, he shows GdiPlus folder and like ours it's missing Pdrivers, guess that means his copy came from srckit too, since they probably only removed Pdrivers folder in srckit releases...

While things like that do happen, this is not an accurate description of the chat room as a whole. There's plenty of people there doing actual work. (and yes, it gets posted here when something is figured out)
In any case, most of the people in there are also active here, especially those that are working on things.
Why is there so much hate for the chat?

Probably because it's pretty much competing with this thread? If everyone here moved there then this thread would be dead pretty fast, and we'd all have to live with scrolling through hours of mindless drivel to find actual work being done.

I'm not wholly against having a chat though, I just don't see much point in it atm, if anons were actually working together on pieces of the code then maybe it'd make sense, but right now everyone seems to be going lone-wolf on things, so what's the point?

I don't really mind as long as things are kept updated between the chat & thread though, but I won't be surprised if more things start being left behind on one of them, that's just what happens when you split up where development happens.

It's an imageboard chatroom, probably one of the only /g/ projects to actually go somewhere.
Hasn't been worked on in a while though, but you can try it out here: https://livebunker.rocks/chat/mu
That site has cert issues though but you can probably ignore them, if anyone ever wants to host their own I think https://github.com/hexator/live4chan is the latest code
